Low UCAT Score? Where to Apply in 2026

A below-average UCAT does not mean you cannot get into medical school. It means you need to apply strategically to schools where your academic record, personal statement, and interview performance carry the most weight.

2026 entryNational mean ~1870/2700Written by an NHS consultant

First, an honest perspective. Medical school admissions are competitive at every score level. A low UCAT score makes some schools near-impossible (Bristol, Newcastle) but leaves many genuinely accessible. The students who succeed with lower scores do so through outstanding preparation in everything else — not by hoping the UCAT is overlooked.

What counts as a low UCAT score?

1870+
National average. Competitive at holistic schools.
1600–1869
Below average. Apply to holistic schools only. Strong rest of application needed.
Below 1600
Significantly below average. Consider whether resitting is viable.

Schools to prioritise

These schools either have low minimum thresholds, use UCAT as a small fraction of the overall score, or take a genuinely holistic approach where strong academics and interview performance can compensate.

Exeter
UCAT only 25% of score
The most UCAT-friendly school for strong academic students. Exeter calculates an "Exeter score" from 25% UCAT and 75% academic performance. This means your A-level grades carry three times the weight of your UCAT. A student with A*A*A and a below-average UCAT is significantly more competitive at Exeter than at most other schools.
Your A-levels and predicted grades are your strongest asset here. Ensure your personal statement is excellent and shows genuine engagement with healthcare.
Leicester
50:50 UCAT and academic
Leicester gives equal weight to UCAT and academic performance. Applicants in the bottom two deciles are typically rejected, but above that threshold, academic strength genuinely compensates. A total score (UCAT + academic) is calculated out of 64, and those above the threshold are invited to interview.
Leicester rewards balance. You need to be strong academically — 9s at GCSE and A*s at A-level — to compensate for a modest UCAT. If your academics are mediocre too, this is a harder choice.
Dundee
No published minimum
Dundee is genuinely holistic with no fixed UCAT cutoff. For 2024 entry, the lowest score invited to interview was approximately 1900, but the overall picture of the application matters. Dundee has a strong preference for Scottish applicants and for candidates with genuine local connections or motivation.
If you are a Scottish applicant, Dundee is an important choice. For non-Scottish applicants, competition is stiffer and the effective threshold is higher — check carefully before applying.
Cardiff
UCAT secondary to academics
Cardiff prioritises academic qualifications and only uses UCAT to differentiate candidates when oversubscribed with strong academic applicants. There is no pre-determined cutoff. For students with exceptional A-level grades and GCSEs, Cardiff can be accessible at scores well below the national average.
Only genuinely viable if your academic record is outstanding. Cardiff's effective bar for UCAT-lighter selection is a very strong academic profile.
Edinburgh
Minimum 1650, UCAT 17.5%
Edinburgh has the lowest published minimum threshold (1650) of any UK medical school. Above this threshold, UCAT contributes only 17.5% of the overall application score, with academics at 50% and interview at 50%. A score of 1700–1800 can be competitive here if your academics and interview are strong.
Edinburgh is one of the best options for low scorers who have excellent academic credentials. The interview carries enormous weight — prepare intensively for it.
Hull York (HYMS)
UCAT 40pts + GCSE 30pts + SJT 15pts
HYMS uses a composite scoring system with a maximum of 85 points. Up to 40 points come from UCAT, 30 from GCSEs, and 15 from SJT banding. Band 4 SJT is an automatic rejection. A student with excellent GCSEs and a good SJT band can be competitive with a lower UCAT because the GCSE component is substantial.
If your GCSEs are outstanding (mostly 8s and 9s), HYMS is worth serious consideration. The composite scoring genuinely rewards academic breadth.

Schools to avoid with a low UCAT score

Be honest with yourself about these schools. Applying to them with a significantly below-average UCAT is not a realistic choice — it wastes one of your four UCAS medicine slots.

Should you resit?

The UCAT can be resit in subsequent years. If your score is significantly below average and your A-levels are strong, resitting may be more productive than applying with a low score.

The decision comes down to timing. If you have time before the next cycle, resitting gives you better options. If you are applying now and cannot resit, focus your energy on maximising the rest of your application at the schools where UCAT carries less weight.

One cycle gap is common among successful medical students. It is far better to take a year, resit the UCAT, and apply with a stronger overall application than to secure a place at a school that isn't your preference.

From a panel member's perspective: Interviewers do not see your UCAT score. Once you are in the interview room, you have already cleared the UCAT bar. The interview is a completely fresh assessment. Students who apply to holistic schools and prepare intensively for interview regularly secure places despite below-average UCAT scores.
